<p>Lecture Summary:</p>
<p>Maxillary sinus lifts and augmentations can be considered as a daily procedure done by the hands of dental surgeons. Although nowadays the diversity and conservative approaches to lift the sinus
exist, we still have a limited knowledge and less of defined protocols of how to manage complications associated with it. These complications mainly happen post surgically but there are other
complications that can occur during the procedure. This presentation will review these complications that are expected and how to manage the major ones that commonly happen in such procedures</p>

<p>Our Study Club speaker for September is Dr. Michael Danielak who will be presenting a lecture entitled:</p>
<p><strong><em>"Digital Dentistry Series Part 1: Implant Planning Using BlueSky Plan"</em></strong></p>
<p>Implant planning has advanced significantly over the past decade with the introduction of sophisticated digital 3D computer software. While model-based surgical planning and surgical guides can provide
clinicians with a good idea as to where to place implants intra-operatively, they lack demonstration of the bony anatomy beneath the soft tissue and quite often leads to “guess-work” during the
surgery. Clinicians who are interested in placing implants or are currently placing implants should be able to utilize 3D implant planning software for precise planning and placement of their
implants. An overlay of a CBCT scan with digital intra-oral models should be considered as a gold standard for pre-surgical implant planning. At the very least, a working knowledge of various
implant planning software can improve communication between the clinician, patient, and laboratory technician during the pre-surgical treatment planning phase.</p>
<p>This seminar is designed to introduce the clinician to a free implant planning software (BlueSky Plan) which clinicians can use to greatly improve the outcomes of their implant placement utilizing
guided surgery. Alive demonstration of the software will highlight the steps needed for planning of a single maxillary anterior implant crown from diagnostic records to digital implant placement
to surgical guide fabrication.</p>

<p>For this year’s annual meeting, Dr. Alan Meltzer DMD, MScD will be presenting a lecture entitled:</p>
<p><strong><em>“Full Arch Immediate Implant Restoration in Challenging Situations” </em></strong></p>
<p><strong>Lecture Summary:</strong> </p>
<p>Today, the use of full arch immediate implant restoration is entering the realm of mainstream treatment. Some believe that removal of teeth and their restorations is the conclusion of a patient’s
dental problems. Some even feel that by giving a patient an oral irrigator they are set for life with no need for professional maintenance. With 30 plus years of implant dentistry behind me,
I have learned that in some cases four implants may be enough, while in other cases it is a formula for disaster. A fixed restoration on four implants can easily become no fixed restoration on
three implants. Case selection, case design, implant selection, abutment selection along with proper hard and soft tissue evaluation and treatment become the keys for success. Finally, designing
a final prosthesis and formulation of a proper maintenance program is mandatory. Let us not trade our patients’ dental problems for implant problems and create unrealistic expectations.</p>

<p>Dr. Stephen S. Wallace is joining Dentium for this year’s congress to present a hands-on workshop about surgical techniques in maxillary sinus surgery entitled:</p>
<p><strong><em>"Development of Surgical Techniques in Maxillary Sinus Surgery"</em></strong></p>
<p><strong>Lecture Summary:</strong></p>
<p>Maxillary sinus elevation has become the most predictable technique for increasing bone volume in the maxillary posterior sextants for the placement of dental implants. Following the development
of trans crestal sinus elevation techniques, the lateral window technique still remains as the “go to” technique for the more advanced cases of bone loss and secondary reparative procedures.
</p>
<p>This presentation will highlight the evolution of the lateral window technique from the early rotary technique through piezoelectric surgery, the DASK technique, the simplified antrostomy design,
and the low window technique. </p>
<p>The evolution of surgical technique follows the desire to create a more simplified protocol both for the surgeon (fewer complications, reduced treatment time) and the patient (reduced treatment time,
reduced postsurgical morbidity). </p>
<p>Along the way, the major complications that occur with this procedure will be addressed both as to avoidance and treatment</p>

<p><strong><em>"Digital Dentistry Series Part 2: Single Implant Crown Fabrication Using Exocad"</em></strong></p>
<p>What happens when you send an implant-impression to the lab? How does the laboratory technician fabricate the crown? To many clinicians, the procedures that take place in the dental laboratory are a
“grey-area” of knowledge that we don’t often get to see. This second part of our two-part mini digital dental series is designed to introduce the clinician to one of the many softwares available
to highlight some of the aspects involved in digital restoration design. A live demonstration of use of the Exocad DentalCAD software will focus on the steps and records required to design a single-tooth
implant supported crown. Although it is unlikely for clinicians to design their own implant restorations, knowledge of the design process is critical to understand what type of clinical records that
technicians need to accurately fabricate the crown.</p>

<p><strong><em>"Peri-implantitis: Understanding, managing, and treating peri-implantitis"</em></strong></p>
<p>Peri-implantitis is a biofilm induced host mediated disease which will be complex to manage. </p>
<p>Preventing the pathology lies on understanding it, its risks factors, and adapting patients' management.</p>
<p>When the peri-implantitis occurs, its treatment can be successful if adequate surgical and protocols are implemented. </p>
<p>Finally, the host being essential in the development of the disease, we may need for patients with advanced periodontal susceptibility to modify our strategies to delay implant placement.</p>

<p>As dentists, we strive to maintain our patient’s dentition. Despite our best efforts we are faced with the reality that many of our patients will require replacement of some or all of their teeth. As
clinicians, we are often faced with the challenge of limited bone quantity in the posterior maxilla. As dental implant therapy has evolved, so has the ability to overcome limited bone quantity. The
DASK provides a very efficient and effective method of sinus grafting in the posterior maxilla with either a direct or indirect approach.</p>

<p><strong><em>"Restoration of the Single Implant"</em></strong></p>
<p>In modern dentistry, single implant supported restorations represent the most conservative clinical approach to the replacement of single missing teeth. In the treatment planning stage, during the surgical
placement and prosthetic steps, as well as throughout the laboratory phases, the most advanced clinical, technical, and digital innovation can, today, be utilized successfully. However, each innovation
must be mediated and implemented using fundamental biological principles to ensure the success, in terms of function, esthetics, and longevity of the final prosthesis. Therefore, the purpose of this
presentation will be to emphasize the importance of combining new digital knowledge and “sound” prosthetic principles in single implant supported restorations. </p>
